Everyone I know, or at least those people who grew up speaking American English, pretty much only says “pan-teez” when the word is standing alone. Otherwise, we say something more like “pa-neez.” That little t is kind of dirty sounding, isn’t it?
I can hear you pronouncing them in your head right now. Panties, panties. Every time it’s pan-teez, there’s a little giggle.
I recently found out that the word originally referred to mens’ undergarments. What a fun world that must have been.
